The Beda had especial reason to be attentive to the recent Consistory – or to give it its fuller title, the Ordinary Public Consistory for the Creation of New Cardinals – in Rome on February 22nd. A long-standing friend of the College, Archbishop Vincent Nichols of Westminster, was therein created a cardinal. The gallery below draws images from the day of the Consistory itself and, a few days later, from a College festive evening meal held in his honour after a thanksgiving Mass in St Paul Outside the Walls. In his letter to each cardinal-designate, Pope Francis called on them to see their cardinalship as a service ‘to broaden your gaze and open your hearts’.
